Latino Heritage Month recognizes the contributions made by Latinos, and raises awareness about important issues in the Latino community. The 25th annual celebration in the Elgin, Illinois community will be held from Sept. 11 to Oct. 15 at Elgin Community College.
Columbia College-Elgin has served the students of ECC looking to earn their bachelor’s degree after completing their associate’s degree for more than 15 years and is housed on the ECC campus. Ms. Nora V. Renteria, a community college and Columbia College alumna, will be the featured speaker at the Wise Latina Brunch on Friday, Oct. 9, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. in Building E University and Business Center.
Renteria is one of the authors of the book Todays Inspired Latina, in which she shares her amazing story in a chapter called “Stepping Stones of Perseverance.” The book is a compilation of stories of 26 Latina women.
The Wise Latina Brunch’s aim is to recognize and be inspired by women who have achieved the highest of goals. General admission tickets are $10 and can be purchased at tickets.elgin.edu.
The festivities begin with the LHM Kick-Off breakfast on Sept. 11, with keynote speaker former Chicago Mayoral candidate Jesús “Chuy” Garcia. Garcia has spent the past 30 years in public service as a Chicago Alderman, Cook County Board Commissioner, and Illinois State Senator.
