For 10 high school seniors and one transfer student, all of their hard work has finally paid off. After an intense day of essay writing and interviews, 11 lucky students have been awarded full-tuition scholarships to Columbia College, including one international student from Jordan.

But the student winners aren’t just called up on the phone with the good news. Instead, admissions staff, along with friends and family, surprise the student at school, presenting them with an oversized check a la Publishers Clearing House. For the winner, relief and elation are obvious to see as Scooter and CC staff arrive to celebrate their academic accomplishments.

Five lucky students were awarded the Columbia College Scholarship which accounts for four years of full tuition, room and board. Five students were awarded the Presidential Scholarship which covers four years of full tuition. One Transfer Scholarship was given to a member of Phi Theta Kappa that will cover two full years of tuition at Columbia College.

The students, all of whom maintain a minimum 3.6 GPA and scored above 26 on the ACT, are clearly shocked at the in-school presentations, but for Jeff Barringer, Assistant Director of Day Admissions, the moment “is the highlight of my job.”

“I really love that we are changing students’ lives by taking away the stress of paying for college,” Barringer said.

It’s a relief shared by students and families alike with parents repeating, through tears, how much their student deserves the award and how much they have worked for this moment.
