Women and children walked in the second annual Fitness Fundraiser Saturday in Beach Park to raise money for single mothers to go to college. The 5K was co-sponsored by the Waukegan-based Teen & Single Mothers Resource Center, a non-profit program that provides one-on-one coaching to help single mothers go to college. Michele Vaughn ’03, a single mother who dropped out of college, started the center two years ago. “When (they) come to us, (they) have to be ready to develop a blueprint for their life,” she said. Vaughn returned to school and now has “an associate of arts degree from the College of Lake County, a bachelor degree in psychology from Columbia College of Missouri, a master of science degree in counseling from Capella University and a doctorate in educational leadership at Argosy University,” according to her profile on the Teen & Single Mothers Resource Center’s website.
