Letter from the Editor
Here we are, pulling out sweaters and watching the leaves change colors. These bits of normalcy are a welcome sight in a season of uncertainty. But as we count down the weeks left in 2020, I’m proud to look back at all that has been accomplished in a year like no other. At Columbia College, we’ve watched our faculty reimagine the classroom to fit the current needs of our students. We’ve interviewed alumni who continue to lift up their communities and navigate this “new normal” with patience and understanding. It’s our pleasure to bring these stories to life with Affinity acting as a time capsule.
Our cover story takes you inside High-Flex, the college’s latest educational innovation that empowers students to choose their best way to learn. We also caught up with several CC professors who have left a lasting impression on our alumni, and we’ll introduce you to Joan Puchta Pata ’63, who shares her CC experience and talks about her brush with Congress. As with every issue, you will find out what’s happening Inside the Gate and celebrate classmates’ accomplishments in Class Notes.
With the move to an all-digital format this summer, we have increased our production schedule to bring you three issues – Fall, Spring and Summer. The magazine has been optimized through an online platform to bring you an enhanced reading experience on any device. Take a look! You are invited to read the traditional flip publication from your desktop or check out the new Stories feature on your phone to see individual articles in a scrolling mobile view.
Carolyn Preul, associate director of Advancement Communications, is editor of Affinity magazine. The magazine is published by the Columbia College Division of Advancement.
