Happy New Year from NAS Lemoore!

By Betsy Quade, director, Columbia College-Lemoore

Betsy Quade2021 is here and I’m sure you will agree that we are all glad to see 2020 fade into the sunset. What a trying and difficult year this has been. We hope you and your family have escaped 2020 and COVID-19. But if not, we certainly wish you a quick recovery and back to being healthy.

By the time you read this, the Early Spring (January) session will be underway. If you are enrolled, we hope that the session has started out well. Going to school (or back to school) is a lofty New Year’s resolution and if you have concerns or questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to us. Joe and I are still working remotely from our homes but know that we are only an email or phone call away.

Registration is open now for the Late Spring (March) session so if you already know what you want to take after Early Spring, you can enroll. Keep in mind, if you are active duty, that the deadline for getting Tuition Assistance approved is two weeks prior to the beginning of the session. For the March session, that date is February 22.

For the spring semester (January and March sessions) our seat classes are still being offered online via Zoom. This allows students to attend a class from the safety of their own homes. Classes meet on the appointed day and time and students are logged in for the whole four hours of the class. The instructor is still there in front of you, just on your computer screen. It really is the best of both worlds. You have the instructor right there and you are safe inside your home. It has been working well.

Unfortunately, since we are not yet back in the office, CLEP and DSST testing is suspended. Once we get back, we will be able to offer those exams once again. We have been getting lots of calls inquiring when testing will resume. The answer is simply, we don’t know. When we have an idea on when we will return, and we are actually back in the office, we will send out an email letting all of our students know that testing can resume. In the meantime, we learned of a college in southern California that is open for testing. If you don’t mind driving a bit, and would like information on this school, please reach out to us.

Fingers crossed that we will be able to have a graduation ceremony this year in May. I know that is only five months away and the chances may be slim that big groups will be able to get together by then, but I am hopeful! So mark your calendars for May 13, 2021. If we are able to hold a ceremony, the group may be quite large. I will be combining last year’s graduates (whose ceremony got cancelled) with this year’s graduates. Stay tuned in late January or February for emails from me with more information. If you haven’t already done so, be sure to submit your Declaration of Candidacy for Degree so you will show up on my report.

We’d like to give a shout out to our Summer Dean’s List students. In the middle of the pandemic, they maintained the required GPA for both Early and Late Summer sessions. Congratulations to Putra Nagara, Jonathan Echevarria, Catherine Montoya, Jonathon Szymczak, Samantha Batt, and Riccardo Luis Gonzales. Job well done in difficult times!

From all of us at Columbia College and especially Joe and myself here at NAS Lemoore, we wish you a very happy and healthy 2021! Stay safe and please follow the CDC guidelines to protect your friends and loved ones. Have a successful Spring Semester!
