Welcome Megan Garms!

By David Stoddard, director, Columbia College-Salt Lake

Megan GarmsMany of you have not been at our location in a few weeks, or even months. The COVID-19 global pandemic has interrupted our interactions and gatherings. We have been studying, working and living differently over the past year. When unforeseen events like the pandemic change what we have been accustomed to, we have the opportunity to be innovative and creative. Columbia College has done that by moving courses to virtual meetings. We have also continued with traditional in-seat courses where possible, and our many online courses. Throughout this crazy time, we will continue to support you in your educational goals.

Here at the location, some things may look a little different. We have taken measures to create social distancing in classrooms, and we have put up safety glass at the reception desk and in offices. Although these things create physical barriers for safety, please do not let them be barriers to your education or the services we provide. To better serve you, we have hired a new academic advisor, Megan Garms.

Megan comes to us from Iowa Lakes Community College where she worked in Student Services as a professional tutor. In that role, she assisted students in various subjects including English, math, sciences, and computer courses. Her skills include preparing students for exams, proofreading, Spanish, and online learning. She prides herself on her ability to connect with students, building professional relationships, and creating engaging lesson plans that help students engage and understand various topics. Her transition to academic advising at Columbia College will be easy because of her love for education and students.

Megan is excited to be in the state of Utah, and in the Salt Lake Valley. She is big on adventure, and she is enjoying her first mountain winter and snow. She moved to Salt Lake with her partner, Jacob and her dog, Finn. When she is not working, she is busy writing her first novel and studying Japanese. She is looking forward to exploring our beautiful landscape and discovering her favorite foods in our diverse restaurant scene.
