By Cory Elfrink, director, Columbia College-Rolla

When new students come to Columbia College-Rolla, one of the first discussions we have with them revolves around “why” they have decided to invest in their formal education. The most popular response is improving their career outlook. While the world of work has changed dramatically over the past year, it’s true that most – certainly not all – salaried roles still require a college degree. It’s really no surprise that people have their career outlook in mind when they decide to go to college: for the average person, a college degree significantly increases their earning potential.

Our local team of instructors, advisors, and support staff are excellent at helping students navigate their way towards an associate’s or bachelor’s degree, but when it comes to Career Services, our greatest resource resides on our main campus in Columbia.

Columbia College’s Career Services office is available to all Rolla students and have perfected their services to work remotely with our students via Zoom. Not only does our team deliver the standard career services such as reviewing resumes and cover letters, but they also offer free 1-on-1 career counseling sessions, career assessments, mock interviews, assistance with finding internships (which offer college credit!) and more. All of this career counseling is free of charge to our students as well as our alumni!

Our students (and alumni) also have free access to Handshake, which is essentially a job search engine designed specifically for college students and recent graduates. You only need your student login information to gain access. Aside from connecting users with openings that match their preferences and backgrounds, Handshake also coordinates virtual career fairs that are limited to their users. There are currently over 100 upcoming virtual events for job-seekers.

We take pride on providing local service and local instructors to our community. We are happy to talk about careers, jobs and internships with our students here at the Rolla location. But for those really looking to jumpstart their career development, an outreach to our Career Services Office is a must! Students can get in touch with the office either through or by calling them at (573) 875-7425. Also, don’t forget to read the rest of the articles in this month’s newsletter in the column on the right!

Congratulations to our dean’s list honorees!
We are proud to honor the Rolla members of the Spring 2021 dean’s list! A student must have completed 12 semester hours in a 16-week period and achieved a minimum GPA of 3.5 on a 4.0-point scale. See the list
