Columbia College hosted Heather McGhee for a session of the Althea W. and John A. Schiffman Lecture in Ethics and Religious Studies on Thursday, March 21. The lecture, which captivated both in-person attendees and a virtual audience across the country, focused on the importance of unity and collective action.

McGhee is a New York Times best-selling author and advocate who focuses on economic equality in the U.S.

McGhee’s call to action was clear: “It takes all of us. It takes collective problem-solving,” she said, urging the audience to embrace cross-racial solidarity as a powerful tool for addressing the systemic challenges that face the nation.

A striking example McGhee provided was the story of public pools in U.S., which were often closed or drained rather than being integrated during the Civil Rights Movement.
