Dr. Jon Oxford makes it his goal to help Columbia College students connect concepts within neuroscience to the big picture of psychology.
“Understanding people is the most advantageous skill you can have,” Oxford says.
Oxford, a native of Columbia, Missouri, who earned his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri, has served as an assistant professor in the Psychology Program at CC since 2019. He previously was an adjunct instructor at the college. Last year, he was honored with the Deans’ Award for Excellence in Scholarship.

Oxford emphasizes getting to know students and tailors his teaching to what will resonate the most with them. He keeps the atmosphere in his classes light with a focus on learning together.
“Students aren’t numbers here,” he says. “They are people we see a lot. We know them, we know their backgrounds, we know what makes them laugh. It’s a community.”
Determined to stay ahead of the curve and to prepare students for success in the modern workforce, Oxford conducts extensive research on how to implement artificial intelligence into the classroom.
“A.I. is here,” he says. “It’s not an option, it’s not a choice, and we can use it for learning.”
