The power of giving was on full display at the Southwell Complex on Tuesday, April 15, during Columbia College’s third Celebration of Philanthropy Luncheon.
The event provides an opportunity to recognize the generosity of contributors who support scholarships and to publicly thank members of the college’s giving societies, which include the President’s Society, St. Clair Society and Cornerstone Club.
“Our donors are the spark that can change the trajectory of a student’s story and help fulfill Columbia College’s mission to improve lives – and for that, we are grateful,” President Dr. David Russell told the audience. “Everyone here today represents the best of our nearly 175-year-old institution. Thank you for being All In For CC.”
At the celebration, contributors, student scholarship recipients, faculty, staff and administrators shared a meal while discussing their Cougar connections.
“I think I can speak for all the students here, but these honors and awards have greatly impacted our futures for the better,” said sophomore Emma Winchester, who was among the recipients of more than 150 scholarships highlighted during the program. “Thank you to all of the donors who have decided to create these scholarships for students who have big dreams.”
Dr. Alan Harris ’77, a longtime alumni leader who established the Alan Harris Missouri Veterans’ Assistance Scholarship, delivered remarks about his reason for giving back to his alma mater. He is a member of each of the college’s giving societies, including the Trustee’s Circle of the President’s Society.
Harris served in the U.S. Army and completed his degree while stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, where CC has maintained a location for more than 50 years.
“I didn’t really start giving back to my school until my 40s, but those of you who are younger, you don’t have to wait,” said Harris, a mental health and grief specialist. “I guarantee you it will add up. It used to be said to give until it hurts. I like the phrase instead, ‘Give until it feels good.’ And if you feel good about what you have given, then you know it is the right thing.”
Harris added that he has experienced the blessings of being both a donor and a recipient.
“It’s a wonderful joy to not just receive but to give,” he said.

Vice President for Advancement Greg Hulen concluded the program by announcing 11 new donor-funded scholarships in support of CC students.
