Tim and Kathleen Bradley didn’t just attend Columbia College together; they conquered it.
In Spring 2025, this unique father-daughter duo from Eldon, Missouri, walked across the graduation stage side by side, each with a degree in hand and a story worth sharing.
Meet the Bradleys
Kathleen or “Katie” Bradley, 25, earned her Bachelor of Arts in Marketing with a Certificate in Digital Marketing. She works full-time for the State of Missouri as an Administrative Support Assistant and enjoys gardening, baking, and video games.
Tim Bradley, who is 52, has an impressive job history. He is a seasoned paramedic of 35 years, a former county coroner, volunteer firefighter, reserve police officer, and SWAT medic. He earned his Bachelor’s in Cybersecurity, with a Minor in Management, and Certificates in C++ Programming, Homeland Security, and Database and Program Development.
How It All Began
Katie was the first to enroll at CC, drawn to the Lake Ozark location because of its flexibility and affordability. Tim’s journey began later. After accompanying Katie on campus visits and even sitting in on a few classes during COVID, he started to wonder if he could pursue a degree of his own.
“I always thought I wasn’t smart enough,” Tim admitted.
However, after encouragement from Columbia College staff and a colleague, he began to reconsider.
“I would always tell Katie when she was struggling in a class that quitting was not an option. You can take a break, or you can slow down, but you cannot quit. I decided to take my own advice and join her — not just to prove it to myself, but to also share this experience with her so she knew she wasn’t alone.”
Moments That Mattered
Some of their most meaningful moments happened outside of the classroom.
Before Tim even started classes, Katie read him her psychology paper on PTSD, which helped him recognize symptoms in himself and seek help. She also chose him as the subject for a paper on local government officials, highlighting his role as county coroner.
These experiences gave them a deeper appreciation for each other’s experiences.
Graduation Day
Just like many students, Tim and Kathleen were nervous but excited to walk on the stage and graduate.
For Katie, who waited till Spring to walk, graduation day was all about family, making sure everyone could attend, spending time with those she didn’t get to see often, and celebrating her accomplishments.
For Tim, it was a moment of both pride and reflection.
“It was surreal for me, starting with the Ivy Chain Ceremony. When Katie was born, we almost lost both her and her mother due to complications during labor. Because of this, I was not able to cut the umbilical cord. With the Ivy Chain Ceremony, for me, it was a chance to do that in a way.” Both used the word “amazing” to describe the day.
Advice for Other Families
Both Bradleys encourage going to school and getting your degree, whatever that journey may look like. “Don’t be afraid to fail or to take the chance because of what has happened in your past,” Tim said. Their journey may not have been traditional, but the support system they built together made all the difference.
Tim also offered great advice for older students or those returning to school later in life.
“Remember you have been a lifelong learner, whether you know it or not. Also don’t worry about being the oldest person in the class. For me, at times, it was actually an advantage.”
A Final Thank You
Both father and daughter expressed deep gratitude for the Columbia College staff, especially at the Lake Ozark campus.
“When I think about school,” Katie said, “I think about the people who helped me get through it.”
Each formed meaningful connections. Tim especially bonded with students who were veterans, finding a welcoming and supportive environment thanks to his background in law enforcement.
