Dr. Christina Hoff-Vollrath has devoted more than three decades to the field of nursing, starting her career as a tech and rising to executive leadership.
Now, she channels her vast experience into mentorship as Chair and Director of the Columbia College Nursing Program.
“Our role is really to mentor and train the next generation of nursing staff,” says Hoff-Vollrath, who previously oversaw the University of Missouri Women’s and Children’s Hospital. “But I think it’s also to highlight the potential that perhaps our students don’t even know that they have.”
Hoff-Vollrath earned a Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Leadership and Innovations in Nursing and Health Systems from the University of Missouri. Her career spans a wide range of roles, reflecting her versatility and commitment. She served as the OBGN Department Director at the MU School of Medicine and held positions such as Director of Nursing and Clinical Manager at MU Health Care.
She has led the Columbia College Nursing Program since 2024.
Working her way up through the ranks offered her a broad perspective on the profession and the many opportunities it offers.
“There’s a huge need for nursing staff out there and a variety of opportunities,” Hoff-Vollrath says.
At Columbia College, Nursing graduates have near 100% job placement, with the only exception being those who continue their studies or wait to apply for jobs until taking the NCLEX.
“There are jobs out there for all of our graduates,” she says.
Hoff-Vollrath is proud of the program’s strong curriculum and emphasis on experiential learning, with dedicated faculty and staff who are deeply invested in student success.
The program is intentionally structured to optimize the faculty-to-student ratio.
“Our students and our faculty get to know each other,” Hoff-Vollrath says. “Our students get to know each other. Our student cohorts tend to be very close, which I love.”
For Hoff-Vollrath, nursing isn’t just a career; it is a calling centered around making a difference.
“It may sound cliché, but every one of us as faculty, and every one of our students, shares a genuine desire to make a difference,” she says. “You enter this profession to care for people. Our responsibility is to ensure we’re preparing them to become the very best generation of nurses they can be.”
