Columbia College and Central Bank of Boone County share parallel histories that are woven into the fabric of the mid-Missouri community.

Both institutions were established in the 1850s and have evolved over generations. Each reflects the commitment of its founders, with enduring missions to improve the lives of those they serve on a daily basis.

Through its impactful corporate partnership, Central Bank supports today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders at Columbia College while investing in the continued education of its workforce. The bank’s employees, their spouses and dependents are eligible for reduced tuition at Columbia College, creating pathways for professional development and career advancement while encouraging lifelong learning.

Few people understand the connection between the two organizations better than Sarah Moreau ’08 ’13.

“My experiences at Columbia College have been valuable throughout every stage of my career at Central Bank,” said Moreau, now a vice president for the bank.

Moreau began her career as a teller at Central Bank while a student at Columbia College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy and Religious Studies before completing a Master of Business Administration five years later. In nearly two decades at the bank, she has advanced to become director of the ProsperU financial literacy program and community outreach officer.

“My education at Columbia College helped build the foundation for the career I have today,” Moreau said. “My undergraduate degree challenged me to think critically, consider different perspectives and communicate ideas effectively. Later, my MBA strengthened my understanding of leadership, business strategy and organizational decision-making. I was fortunate to have professors and advisors who were genuinely invested in my success.”

A lifelong Boone County resident, Moreau originally was drawn to Columbia College by the opportunity to play softball. Some of her favorite memories of her undergraduate experience stem from her involvement on campus, including participation in several honor societies.

She credits her “incredibly positive” education at Columbia College for helping shape not only what she knows, but how she approaches leadership and service.

“Those experiences taught me how to work effectively with others, lead through challenges and manage competing priorities – skills that have continued to serve me throughout my career,” Moreau said.

Her first job at the bank working directly with customers provided a firsthand look at the financial challenges people face and the impact financial knowledge can have on their opportunities and decisions.

Previously unsure of what career she wanted to pursue, Moreau gradually began to envision a future in banking.

“As opportunities continued to present themselves at Central Bank, I found roles that challenged me and allowed me to make a difference in the lives of others,” she said. “Whether helping someone purchase a vehicle, navigate credit challenges or achieve a financial goal, I saw the difference that education and guidance could make.”

Those experiences sparked Moreau’s passion for financial education and ultimately led her to her current role leading ProsperU.

Through the free program, she helps community members gain confidence in managing their finances through classes, presentations and one-on-one support.

“I love helping people realize they are capable of improving their financial lives,” Moreau said.

She finds great reward in helping participants move from uncertainty to understanding on financial topics that can often seem overwhelming.

Most importantly, she helps people take meaningful action toward their goals.

Through leaders like Moreau, the partnership between Columbia College and Central Bank continues to strengthen the communities that both serve.

“Knowing that our work can have a lasting impact on individuals, families and the community is what makes my role meaningful to me every day,” Moreau said.
