When Luana Fields ’10 left Brazil to attend Columbia College, she was looking for an opportunity to grow: as a student, an athlete and a person.

She found all three.

Her experience on campus transformed her life, providing the foundation for a successful career as a financial advisor with Edward Jones in Columbia, Missouri, and a lifelong commitment to serving others.

Today, Fields continues to give back as a member of the Columbia College Alumni Association Advisory Council while balancing her career with raising two daughters. A four-time NAIA All-American volleyball player and 2015 Columbia College Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, she remains passionate about mentoring young adults, supporting first-generation college students and creating pathways for future leaders.

CC Connected caught up with Fields to reflect on her Columbia College journey and the lessons that continue to guide her today:

What originally drew you to Columbia College?

Coming from Brazil, I was searching for a place where I could challenge myself, grow and feel at home all at once. Columbia College immediately stood out — not just for its strong academics, but for the opportunity to compete at a high level in collegiate volleyball. I wanted more than just a team or a classroom; I was looking for a community that would push me, support me and believe in what I could become.

Columbia College gave me exactly that. It offered the balance I didn’t know I needed, a place where high expectations came with real encouragement, and where I was able to grow as an athlete, a student and a person. Looking back, choosing to come here was one of the best and most transformative decisions of my life. I’m truly grateful I made that leap.

How would you describe your experience as a student here?

My experience at Columbia College was truly transformative. As a four-time first-team All-American volleyball player and a Graphic Design major, I had the opportunity to practice discipline, resilience and leadership, especially under pressure. But beyond the achievements, it was the people who shaped me most. The relationships I built with teammates, professors and mentors strengthened my confidence and work ethic in ways that continue to guide me every day. Columbia College didn’t just prepare me for my career. It helped shape the person I am today.

Can you share a bit about your career journey since graduating from CC?

After graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design, I later earned my master’s degree and ultimately transitioned into financial services. Today, I am a financial advisor with Edward Jones in Columbia, Missouri, where I help individuals and families build long-term financial strategies with clarity and confidence. My background in athletics and design shaped my disciplined, strategic and personalized approach to serving clients.

What inspired you to join the CCAA Advisory Council?

Columbia College played a pivotal role in my life, and serving on the CCAA Advisory Council feels like a meaningful way to give back. I want to help create opportunities for current student-athletes — especially international students — to thrive academically, athletically and professionally. Being able to support the next generation of leaders is both an honor and a responsibility I value deeply.

What does being a graduate of Columbia College mean to you?

Being a Columbia College graduate represents perseverance, growth and gratitude. It reminds me that I had the courage to leave my home country and build a life rooted in purpose and opportunity. Columbia College will always be part of my foundation, personally and professionally.

What keeps you busy in your free time?

Outside of work, I stay active through fitness and yoga, and I continue to coach and mentor in athletics. I’m also a mother of two daughters who keep me inspired and busy. I enjoy creative projects, painting and staying engaged in the Columbia community.
