Saturday’s commencement one for all ages

Columbia College’s commencement speaker was a traditional student who grew up just miles from Main Campus. One couple traveled from South Carolina to receive master’s and bachelor’s degrees. A future nurse persevered through a period of homelessness, another followed in her daughter’s footsteps, and a former sailor overcame the loss of a half-dozen of his shipmates.

Haarmann reaching her goals in soccer, classroom

She’s just come from an advising appointment, where she mapped out a potential double-major. Earlier in the day, she answered phones and assisted with fellow students getting pictures taken for their student IDs. Later, she’ll head to R. Marvin Owens Stadium for soccer practice, and she’ll certainly hang out with friends afterward. It’s all in a day’s work for Greta Haarmann, and it’s all done with a smile.
